- : Hi!

- : I bought Final Writer 2.1 about a year ago, and have been using it for
- : all my word processing ever since. It is a fine piece of software, but
- : it lacks some very important features to become a professional WP.
-
- You _do_ realize that FW is up to version 4.? now.
-
- : The most important is the lack of references and numbering. As I sometimes
- : have to write scientifical reports, I need my WP to number the chapters and
- : subchapters, figures, tables (another omission) and equations. But this
- : is not possible in FW2.1, and not in the newer versions either, as far as
- : I can see. This makes the package useless for this kind of work. It boils
- : down to being a letter writer for me, and that is not enough. (and also the
- : reason why I don't upgrade).
-
- Numbering chapters is, I guess, not automatic. But available. Set
- up each chapter as a section with the chapter number as the name of the
- section. Does any WP do this sort of numbering for you? This is a purely
- DTP function that may not have been co-opted yet.
-
- : So what I would like to see in FW release 5 is:
- : - Automatic numbering of chapters, subchapter, subsub... etc...
- *this has some limited appeal
- : - Automatic handling of figure- and tablecaptions.
- *this is also of limited appeal
- : - Tables, of course!!!
- *this has lots of appeal
- : - Equation numbering,
- *another feature for techie scholastics only
- : - Equation Editor. (why don't make a deal with the author of
- : the great EqEd-program????)
- *you offer a good solution
- : - Options for refering to chapters, figures, tables, etc.
- *some of this is available in v4
- :
- : A friend of mine showed me a copy of Final Writer release 4. It looks great, and
- : I must compliment you on the work.
- :
- : However there is one flaw I have noticed.
- : The tab-markers (or pageflips, or whatever you call them) are a great idea.
- : It is very convenient to be able to jump from page to page or section to
- : section by just clicking these flips.
- :
- : But as far as we could figure out, there were only two options:
- : - Pagenumbers on the top of the sheet.
- : - pagenumbers on the top and sectionnames on the bottom.
- :
- : My question is: Why can't you have only the sectionnames on the bottom???
-
- Because it takes more code and the coders did not expect users to
- be interested in this variation?
-
- : If you are using a smaller screen than my friends 800x600, the editing area
- : must become very small, and it could be that some users finds it more
- : convenient to jump from section to section, and save the space on the top
- : for editing?
-
- The tabs are an interesting option. Real bad idea for use while
- writing but excellent for use while browsing a written document. I agree
- that they take up too much space, though. Each tab could be 30% smaller
- in each dimension without significant loss in functionality or
- legibility - providing an extra line or two of text on the screen.
